Knoting on the back side of a piece

I would like to get your feeling on whether or not to tie a knot on the back of a piece that you are stitching. I have read a few articles that say you aren't supposed to do that. On many pieces that I have done I have in fact put knots on the reverse side. What are your feelings about doing this and how do you handle tieing off the ends of thread when you are done.

Hi Jean,

I used to knot my ends but I don't any longer because they can pull out of the hole. Instead, I run my thread under at least four stitches on the back and I sometimes loop around one before going under the rest. This makes it feel more secure to me.

Hope this helps.

For me, it depends on the project. If it's for afghans and anything else that needs washing, I would prefer tying it up so it won't loosen up. Angela's suggestion works, too. For other projects like framing and others, I just leave the end free.

That makes sense. I have just recently started on an afgan which is fun.
