Adding interest with cross stitch
Contrary to popular belief, cross stitching can be interesting. Cross stitching can also add interest to a room in several ways. One way is to repeat elements that are found in a detailed cross stitch pattern and place these elements throughout the room. Another way is to set up part of a room to look exactly like a pattern. Finally, a third way is to have a picture converted to a cross stitch pattern and then display both the picture and the finished cross stitched piece.
One way you can add interest to a room is by building upon a pattern that you like. Once you find a cross stitch pattern you like, take several smaller images found within the pattern and cross stitch each image as a separate piece. You have two options of how to treat these separate pieces. One option is to frame each piece and hang the frames around the original cross stitched pattern. For example, in a pattern that has several different flowers, each flower could be cross stitched and framed individually. The second option is use the separate pieces as accent pieces, such as pillow cushions, drawstring bags, or miniature wall hangings. For example, if the pattern has several phrases or sentences in it, each phrase or sentence could be cross stitched on its own pillow cushion and placed on chairs in the same room as the original design. Both options will make the room more interesting because people will want to look around to find where the smaller images have been placed. Make it a game and see who can correctly guess how many smaller images there are in the room!

Those projects left undone
How many of us have ever started a project that has ultimately been left unfinished? I most certainly am guilty as charged. I have to admit though there are times that I have worked on something for days on end only to put it away for days on end and ultimately do one of two things. I either find it in the closet that I put it in and start working on it again until it's done or leave it there for another day. I'm also getting to a point that I'm running out of space on my walls to hang things. Hence have started on things such as placemats, napkins and hand towels. Though I love to work on a project as I'm sitting watching tv. Keeps my hands busy. Have you ever thought about taking a picture that you have and turn it into a cross stitch design? I find it to be rather intriguing that we as stitchers are given the opportunity to do that. Has anyone actually tried to do that yet? If you have I'd love to hear from you and what kind of success you've had with it. I haven't gotten that creative yet.

Waste Canvas
Ever see a t-shirt, quilt or even a baby's bid with a cute design cross stitched on it and wonder how it was done? Sometimes the design is pre-printed or stamped on the material. If not, there is a wonderful product called "waste canvas". Waste canvas is a grid of thread held together with a starch glue agent. It is used as a guide material for stitching on non evenweave type fabrics (like a t-shirt), so that you can stitch neatly and maintain the correct size of the design and then remove the waste canvas to leave only your cross stitched design on the fabric.
To use the waste canvas, first find the centre of the canvas by folding it in half and then half again. Mark the centre lightly with a pencil or a single cross stitch. Next, attach the waste canvas to your fabric with a tack or running stitch along the edges of the canvas. Now you can stitch your design through the waste canvas and through the fabric beneath using the squares of the waste canvas as a guide for the cross stitch, as you would do with an evenweave fabric like Aida cloth. Make sure that the points of the crosses are touching as any gaps will look unsightly.
Once you are finished cross stitching, you are ready to remove the waste canvas. First, remove the stitches that you put in to hold the waste canvas in place and then dab or spray the area with water. Water is used because the waste canvas is only held together with a starch based glue and the moisture will dissolve the starch. This then allows you to pull out the waste canvas threads one at a time, either by hand or with tweezers. If you find that you have stitched a bit tightly over a strand, just cut either side of the waste canvas thread, so that it is shorter and easier to work with, and remove the canvas thread as normal.
Now you are ready to cross stitch any design on any type of fabric. What a great way to personalize your next project and make it even more special!

The needle is inserted at the top of one side of the “x” from the bottom of the fabric and then brought diagonally to the bottom of that side of the “x.” To finish a stitch, the needle is then brought up from underneath the fabric and reinserted across the first half of the “x” now forming the completed cross stitch.
You can do an entire row of cross stitches by going from top to bottom on one side and then going back over the row in the other direction. The important part to remember is to keep the underneath stitches all going in the same direction and the top stitches all the other way. This makes the finished image have the same knap and allow it look as if it were painted.

Counted cross stitch works the same way, only the image is not printed on the fabric. Instead, symbols on a pattern tell you what color thread, called floss in cross stitching lingo, to use and for how many stitches. You then count from there how many stitches to use for the next color on your pattern.
The best way to start a counted cross stitch is to find the center of the image on your pattern and the center on your fabric and start from there. Patterns are printed on grids and cross stitch fabric looks like a grid, so it is easy to match the squares you’ll use to form the “x”es from the pattern to the fabric.

Cross Stitch Kits
I found this article to be very interesting. I think that we've all had a tough time once in awhile deciding on what kind of kit to work on. This gives a brief description of all the different kinds that are sold in most craft stores. Let me know what you think.
If you go into a typical craft store, you will see the supplies for many types of crafts. For cross stitching, you will find thread, beads, fabric, patterns and kits. Looking at the cross stitch kits, you can see that there are several different types to choose from. Below, is a quick description of each type of kit and the main advantage and disadvantage for each one.
Counted Cross Stitch – Stitches are done on a piece of blank aida cloth. By using a pattern (also called a chart) you have to count the squares on the cloth to know where to place your stitches. For example, if you start with a symbol in the middle of the pattern you will place the corresponding stitch on the middle of the aida cloth. From there, count how many stitches there are of that symbol on the pattern and place them on the cloth relative to the first stitch.
The advantage of this method is that the look of the finished piece is uniform for the whole piece and many stitchers like this look the best. The disadvantage of this method is that it is easy to lose count of the stitches, resulting in an error in where the stitches have been placed on the cloth. To correct the error, you would then need to pull out the incorrect stitches.
Stamped Cross Stitch – The design is printed on the fabric, usually in colour, which will tell you what colours to cross stitch and where. I find that stamped cross stitch works best when the design is simple and you only need to use a small number of colours.
The advantage of this method is that you don't need to rely on a pattern or chart to know where to place your stitches, which can result in fewer mistakes than counted cross stitch. The disadvantage is that if the colours printed on the fabric are very similar, it can be hard to distinguish what colour to place where.
Embellished Cross Stitch – A design is printed on fabric and only a few parts on the finished piece need to be filled in or accented with cross stitching.
The advantage of this type is that it is faster to cross stitch an embellished fabric because you do not need to cross stitch the entire picture. The disadvantage of this method is that sometimes the pattern that is printed on the cloth is not printed straight. Also, some people think that the finished piece is not as pretty as pieces that are not embellished.
No-count Cross Stitch – Outlines are printed on the fabric and a chart shows what colour to fill in with x's.
The advantage of this method is that it is supposed to be faster than counted cross stitch, as you don't have to count to find out where each stitch should go. The disadvantage is that, similar to embellished cross stitch, sometimes the pattern that is printed on the cloth is not printed straight.
Every stitcher has a preference in the type of cross stitching that they like to do. Their preference is based on how much time they have to cross stitch, the end result and the ease of cross stitching that kit. Explore the different kits available and see which one you like the best.
